We are a strategic, experienced and reliable partner in the field of component and equipment production for VVER nuclear technology (PWR pressurized water reactors) as well as the western-type BWR reactors (boiling water reactors).

Production

We have been operating in the VVER nuclear technology market for more than 40 years. During this time, we have produced 21 complete VVER-440/V-213 type reactors and three VVER 1000/V-320 type reactors, including the control rod drives. For more than a quarter of a century, we have also been active in the market of PWR and BWR-type nuclear power plants.

Our entry to this market required the acquisition of special certifications, such as ISO, ASME, DIN, CEFRI and others. We have gradually worked our way up to the role of a qualified supplier of nuclear equipment for the main contractors and operators of nuclear power plants in Western Europe, the U.S.A. and the Far East. We produce equipment either based on the customer's documentation or we can develop and manufacture new equipment based on the initial design.

ŠKODA JS responded to the changes in demand for complete VVER type reactors in the 1990s by developing a new production program focused on handling of spent nuclear fuel. This is currently one of the key segments of our production division.

In the early 1990s, ŠKODA JS further focused on the modernization and lifetime extension of existing components as well as on the supply of spare parts. We developed and produce compact storage racks of our own design. A product category offering good prospects is storage casks for various fuel types and nuclear waste, developed, licensed and supplied by us.

Our key product is modernized control rod drives, which we produce and supply for various types of nuclear power plant reactors as well as research nuclear reactors, including the I&C system. Thanks to our innovations, we have gradually managed to extend their design lifetime and met all the technical as well as legislative requirements for extended reliable operation of control rod drives in both standard and emergency modes.

We have a unique machine park, including a crane with load-bearing capacity of 400t. We can heat-treat, weld, mechanically machine, blast or perform color surface treatment of standard and oversized structures, forgings, castings and weldments from carbon and stainless steel. We offer capacities of electric car furnaces; chamber furnaces; WPA portal boring machine; W 200 and W 250 horizontal boring machines; SIU 400 lathe; Schiess, SKIQ and SKJT carousels; Deuma 250t automatic welding machine; Loch and Wohlenberg deep-boring machines; MCV and Correa machining centers; Integrex, Nexus, Mazak, Masturn turning-lathe centers; Weiler and Geminis lathes, including locksmith, cleaning and inspection operations.

Material Engineering

When implementing its projects, ŠKODA JS a.s. uses, to a large extent, the following materials:

  • Semi-finished products of high-grade stainless steels, with focus on special materials for nuclear power engineering
  • Metallurgical semi-finished products (steel sheets, bars and tubes) of austenitic and martensitic corrosion-resistant steels particularly to the EN standards for general use and pressure parts

  • We offer turn-key solutions of material issues from design and calculations to conventional and also special material tests.
  • We proceed on the availability of stock of a wide range of specific material and semi-finished product grades.
  • To provide comprehensive solutions of material issues, we have our own material engineering, material laboratory, calculation and corrosion specialists available.
  • The assessment and proposal of a suitable material can be developed up to the level of assessment by technological specialists in machining, welding, heat and surface treatment technologies.

  • The synergetic work of these units makes it possible to propose specific material grades for given environments, offer substitute materials to different national standards (ČSN, EN, ASTM/ASME), analyse the causes of material failures in operation, make material tests, and design and verify material heat treatment modes for specific operation requirements.

Offered material tests:

  • Tensile tests at room and increased temperatures
  • Brinell, Rockwell and Vickers hardness tests
  • Impact bending tests at room and low temperatures (to -60 °C)
  • Metallographic examination of materials using an optical microscope (micro- and macrostructure analyses)
  • Verification of heat treatment modes in atmospheric and vacuum furnaces, maximum batch weight 50 kg
