Paks nuclear power plant, Hungary
ŠKODA JS has been a supplier of the Paks NPP in Hungary since the nuclear power plant’s construction in 1980-1987. There are four units operated at the power plant, with all of them successfully running VVER 440 / V-213 reactors produced and supplied by ŠKODA JS. Over the years, we have supplied control rod drives, intermediate rods, tensioners and neutron in-core measurement channels to all four units at the power plant. We have also performed regular in-service inspections of the reactor pressure vessels.
In 2015, we won the tender for the replacement of the instrumentation and control systems at all four units of Paks NPP. This was a very interesting and extensive “turnkey” modernization project. ŠKODA JS replaced the previous reactor control systems, reactor rod control systems and shutdown switches from the original Russian supplier with modern, digital equipment. ŠKODA JS acted as the general supplier and creator of both the Basic and Detail Design concept. We applied our ability to effectively manage projects in an international environment, with deliveries by the Czech company ZAT a.s. and activities provided by Hungarian companies integrated into a single supply chain management model.
In 2018, Unit 3 at Paks NPP underwent modernization, with the newly installed equipment successfully commissioned in June. The trial run of the commissioned units confirmed the reliability and safety of our equipment. In mid-2019, ŠKODA JS completed the modernization, and the final modifications of the nuclear power plant simulator for staff training and the unification of the units were completed in 2020.
ŠKODA JS participated in and won the tender for the supply of KNI neutron flux measurement equipment in 2021. As part of the contract, ŠKODA JS will supply 156 KNI detectors to the customer as a basic range, with a possible option for a further 46 units of this equipment. The KNI equipment manufactured and supplied by ŠKODA JS operates reliably not only at the Paks NPP, but also at other VVER 440 and VVER 1000 power plants.
In the same year, 2021, ŠKODA JS won the tender for reactor pressure vessel inspections to be carried out between 2021 and 2024 on units 2, 3 and 4 of the Paks nuclear power plant. ŠKODA JS has taken advantage of its extensive experience gained in the past years and, last but not least, a well-coordinated and experienced team of technicians and engineers from the Operational Inspection Department to achieve this success.
At the end of 2021, ŠKODA JS was successful in a tender for the manufacture and supply of intermediate rods for the reactor control drives. This is one of the company’s top products for the reliable operation of VVER 440 reactors.
